Looking Backwards

Now that the markets are finally catching up to Cataclysm content with larger stockpiles of current materials and items, the older stockpiles from Wrath have started to really dissipate. One of the trends I noticed on my server was that some of the older materials now sell for more gold and people are actually buying them.

It’s not as fast a turnaround as Cataclysm mats, but it’s still something and with prices for level 85 mats dropping, maybe it’s time to consider a quick return trip to Northrend.

Ackis Recipe List

Ackis Recipe List is a very handy addon for your everyday WoW completionist. Basically it can scan through your trade-skill windows and derive a list of recipes you need and it will tell you where to get them. Combine that with the ability to customize the search to include or filter out various factions, types, even expansions and you have a very powerful tool to use that will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Introduction to Mining

Mining

Mining is one of 3 gathering professions (the others being herbalism and skinning) and is the process of, you guessed it, mining ore and stone from random nodes in zones of varying level. Mining supplies crafting professions like blacksmithing, engineering, jewelcrafting, and some alchemy transmutes. Because of this, it’s usually in the highest demand on any given server and because of that, there are usually large supplies available.

That being said, mining is super-easy to get into and highly profitable, especially when combined with your own crafting professions.

NPCScan

NPCScan and it’s twin NPCScan.Overlay are addons used specifically for finding rare NPC spawns in Outland, Northrend, and Cataclysm zones. Simple to configure and use and quick to scare the pants off you once it does find something, this addon scans through the user cache for selected targets and lets you know when you’ve hit paydirt well before you even see your target.

Tracking Gold Flow

Gold Flow

Knowing how much gold is coming in and going out is fundamental to your ability to know if you’re being successful. Just like regular banking where you need to know your account balance and have an idea of how it got to be that much, this info can keep you from going broke. Luckily World of Warcraft doesn’t let players go into debt, so at least we don’t have to worry about repaying loans except to guilds and other players (if applicable).

There are several money addons available for the game that do overall tracking and banking for your characters and can show you how much you have on a particular server. At bare minimum you need a count of how much each character on server has and a combined total is great too.

Hot Item: Truegold

Hot Item

Truegold is the latest and greatest money-making transmute in the game. People pay for transmutes, people sell bars of this stuff, people probably shiv each other in back alleys for it. Why? Because it’s used in copious amounts for 525 level blacksmithing an engineering crafting. Plus a little recipe called Vial of the Sands.

Postal

Postal is a mailbox enhancement addon with a lot of nifty features and is practically a required addon for any player, not just the ones trying to make more gold. Features like Blackbook, CarbonCopy, DoNotWant, Express, OpenAll, Rake, Select, TradeBlock, and Wire all come together to form a much easier mailing experience. Why is game mail such a big deal? Because it’s efficiency. And efficiency really counts when you start making gold.

Gemstone Shuffle

Jewelcrafting

This is a tactic I read about recently on WoW Insider, though there are some rumors going around that it might get balanced out in the upcoming 4.1 patch. Time then, is of the essence.

Put simply, the shuffle is the ability of a player to buy their ore on the auction house (or mine it for maximum profit), prospect it into Cata level gems, then either auction, transmute, or straight up vendor cut versions of those gems for a serious windfall. The tactic relies on one specific piece of information: Any cut green gem will vendor for 9g.

Introduction to Jewelcrafting

Jewelcrafting

Jewelcrafting is a crafting profession introduced with the Burning Crusade expansion. It’s chief concern is the production of gems for boosting the stats of slotted items, though there are various other items like rings, necklaces, and even fist weapons that can be made. Mining supplies most of the raw materials for leveling jewelcrafting in the form of bars, stone, and Prospected gems, powders, etc. from ore (Stacks of 5 per).

Jewelcrafting is unique in that recipes can not only be learned, found, and purchased, but special JC-only daily quests can be completed for Dalaran and faction capitals for additional gems and recipes. The Cataclysm dailies offer good opportunities to make gold as well as increase guild xp and rep.

Back from Vacation

Public Menace

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Look, I can explain. Sit down and I’ll regale you with a tale of dragons, tidal waves, and sandy beaches. Not necessarily in that order.

So I got bored and had some gold saved up so I took a vacation. Two years huh? Okay, an extended vacation, so sue me. I dropped by Booty Bay, had quite a bit to drink, hopped on a boat, and traveled the world. Sounds like a fun party cause it WAS. A few months back I’m at Steamwheedle Port, sipping south island iced teas out by the docks when I see this shadow on the horizon. Well, this shadow keeps getting bigger and bigger and well, I figure what’s coming next ain’t natural but there’s not exactly too many places to run in the middle of freakin’ nowhere, so I keep watching.
